According to the Light Electric Vehicle Association (LEVA), the latest figures reveal that 4.6 million Dutch inhabitants possess an electric bicycle. With 4.9 million electric bikes in the country, it appears that many owners have more than one electric bike.
Since 2020, electric bikes have accounted for more than 50% of all bike sales in the Netherlands. As a result of their popularity, there is currently a thriving maintenance market. According to one recent estimate, the yearly value of the Netherlands electric bicycle maintenance business is €200 million.
We discussed this previously in our post on e-bike battery repairs and refurbs with Dutch-based Heskon Accu, which specializes in this business and currently employs 50 people. This is a marketing measure in terms of this factor alone, obviously there are many other e-bike maintenance tasks that need to be carried out as well.
We reported earlier this month that KwikFit is now offering the e-bike service in the Netherlands. The company believes there is a growing demand for fast local services, regardless of brand, as people often choose to buy electric bikes online.
It's all reflective of a more mature market, as well as maybe slightly different maintenance attitudes compared to conventional bikes.
According to BikeBiz, Multiscope's E-bike Monitor research of over 3,200 Dutch bikers discovered that the average annual maintenance cost for electric city bikes and speed pedelecs is €41, with a total yearly spend of €156m for this category.
Owners in categories such as electric mopeds and hybrid electric bikes spent 44 euros a year and €34m in total; Owners of foldable e-bikes, e-freight bikes and e-tricycles spent 54 euros a year for a total of 12 million euros.
For e-bike maintenance, over two-thirds of customers (66%) preferred choosing bike shops to repair ebikes, while 14 percent preferred to consult the manufacturers. Owners accounted for 9% of the total, while in 7% of cases, no maintenance was necessary.
